'20 Days in Mariupol' wins Oscar, Channel 4 excels at British Documentary Awards

The Oscar-winning documentary 20 Days in Mariupol received two awards at The Grierson Trust’s 2024 British Documentary Awards. Channel 4 won five awards, BBC won three, and Netflix won two at the event held in London.

Mstyslav Chernov's 20 Days in Mariupol won the Academy Award for best documentary and received awards for best current affairs and best cinema documentary. Me and the Voice in My Head by Hungry Bear Media won best single documentary — Domestic, and Joe Tracini was named best documentary presenter. This year's award recipients covered diverse topics, including documentaries on the conflict in Ukraine, a Turkish singer's recovery and advocacy against femicide, and a new perspective on racism in the United States.


The winning films highlighted mental health challenges, the Muslim faith in Britain, sports influence, and a Korean film club. Stacey Dooley, a British journalist known for BBC Three documentaries on child labor and women in developing nations, received the Grie rson Trustees' Award.

Lorraine Heggessey, chair of the Grierson Trust, praised this year's Grierson Awards for showcasing the creativity and ambition of documentary filmmakers, highlighting industry diversity. She acknowledged challenges faced by filmmakers globally, expressed admiration for their dedication, and thanked commissioners and funders for their support.
