A24’s “A Different Man” took home the best feature award at the 2024 Gotham Awards on Monday night at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
At the same time, “Sing Sing” dominated the acting categories, with Colman Domingo securing the award for best lead performance and Clarence Maclin for best supporting performance. According to Variety, for nominations, each category is decided by a different jury composed of critics, journalists, and other industry professionals, and screening links must be provided to all jury members. A completely separate group selects the winners. This contrasts with the Oscars or the BAFTAs, which are determined by actors, filmmakers, and other artists within the entertainment industry.
Besides the nominees, the Gothams awarded special tributes to several of Hollywood’s top stars, including Oscar winner Angelina Jolie (Performer Tribute) for “Maria,” Emmy winner Zendaya (Spotlight Tribute) for “Challengers,” Timothée Chalamet and James Mangold (Visionary Tribute) for “A Complete Unknown,” and the cast of “Sing Sing” (Social Justice Tribute).
This is the second year that the annual ceremony organized by the Gotham Film & Media Institute has eliminated the $35 million budget limit for eligible films. Previous winners of the Gotham's top award have been “Spotlight” (2015), “Moonlight” (2016), and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (2022), each of which later won the best picture at the Oscars.
