Kevin Costner, the Oscar winner for the best director in 1991, is now coming back as the director’s chair for “Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1.” It is only the fourth film that Conster has directed so far and the first time in over 20 years that he has taken on the role of director. Indeed, during all this time, the director has mainly focused on his acting and producing projects.
At the film’s Los Angeles premiere, Costner highlighted his uncertainty about directing a film after a long time. However, he did not feel like offering his role to somebody else and potentially losing the results that “Horizon” could achieve. Costner declared, “I didn’t want to come away not bringing everything home that I thought the movie had a chance to deliver. There are people that are more talented than myself, I’m sure that [there are] directors [who] really understand the camera, but I believe in the story and I believe so much in it that for me I think that comes shining through my movies.”
Horizon is a four-part film series, with the first two parts going to be released in August and the last two currently in development. The storyline of this movie covers a 15-year period, retracing the pre- and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West.
Some important figures that joined the project are: Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson, Jena Malone, Michael Rooker and Jamie Campbell Bower. All of them seem to appreciate Costner’s work as a director. Worthington reveals, “He’s got a wealth of cinematic knowledge, he’s worked with some of the greats, and I just tried to listen and take in everything he said and try to learn a little from him.”
Similarly, Bower expresses gratitude towards the director since he was a child: “I was born in 1988, Kevin Costner the movie star is everything to me. My family WhatsApp group was blowing up.This is a huge part of his life and he loves this. I’d follow that anywhere.”
Costner’s efforts to develop Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 date back to a long time ago, with $38 million of his own money spent just to make the films when no studio would sign on and finance. But time rewards everything, and Costner is now recognized as the bravest person in Hollywood. And Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 hits theaters on Friday, June 28th.
