"Anyone but You": A Modern Twist on the Rom-Com Genre in the Vein of "Friends with Benefits

The upcoming week will be marked by the highly anticipated release of the American romantic comedy "Anyone But You." Scheduled for release in the United States on December 22 by Sony Pictures Releasing, the film is poised to captivate audiences.

Sydney Sweeney, breakout star of "Euphoria," takes on the role of Bea, while Glen Powell, known for his work in "Top Gun: Maverick," portrays Ben, anchoring the comedic drama at the heart of the story.

Set against the backdrop of a vacation in Sydney, the film follows two individuals who, despite their mutual disdain, find themselves unable to escape each other's company. Initially appearing as the perfect couple, a twist occurs after a remarkable first date, turning their once fiery attraction ice cold. Their paths unexpectedly collide again at a destination wedding in Australia, prompting them to embark on a mature charade—pretending to be a couple.

The storyline may evoke a sense of deja vu for fans of director Will Gluck, renowned for his work on the 2011 hit film "Friends with Benefits" starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis. Drawing parallels to that narrative, "Anyone But You" features Jamie and Dylan, two initially incompatible individuals who, through feigned couplehood, discover a deeper connection beyond mere 'benefits.'

Director Will Gluck appears poised to replicate the success of "Friends with Benefits" with this fresh and edgy comedy, "Anyone But You."

Sydney Sweeney, reflecting on the film at CinemaCon 2023 shortly after wrapping up production in Australia, shared, “It delivers love, humor, and sensuality—all the elements that make a great movie. We aim to revive the charm of classic rom-coms with Will Gluck, and we’re thoroughly enjoying the process.”.
