Berlinale 2025 Opens with the World Premiere of Das Licht and Honors Tilda Swinton

The 75th Berlin International Film Festival officially kicked off on February 13, 2025, with a dazzling opening night at the Berlinale Palast. The highly anticipated world premiere of Das Licht (The Light), directed by Tom Tykwer, set the stage for this year’s cinematic celebration. The film, a German-French co-production, dives into the complexities of middle-class family life in a world that’s growing increasingly unstable. With Das Licht being showcased as a Berlinale Special Gala, this marks Tykwer’s third time opening the festival, following Heaven (2002) and The International (2009). Tala Al-Deen brought understated sophistication in a flowing midnight blue dress, adding to the night’s refined atmosphere. The excitement in the air was undeniable as the cast and crew of Das Licht took the stage, met with enthusiastic applause from an audience eager to witness Tykwer’s latest cinematic vision.

Beyond the film’s premiere, the evening also paid tribute to Tilda Swinton, who was honored with the Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement. The award, presented by director Edward Berger, recognized her remarkable contributions to the world of cinema. Swinton reflected on her long-standing connection with Berlinale, recalling her first festival experience in 1986 with Caravaggio, the film that introduced her to international audiences. From her early collaborations with Derek Jarman to her acclaimed roles in Michael Clayton, Snowpiercer, and The Souvenir, Swinton’s career has been defined by her unique artistic choices and transformative performances. The night concluded with a vibrant after-party, hosted by CUPRA, featuring electrifying DJ sets by ALYSSA & GIA and MESTIZA, keeping the celebratory energy alive well into the night.
