Celebrating 60 Years of Excellence: Highlights from the 2025 Swedish Film Awards

The 60th Guldbagge Awards, hosted by the Swedish Film Institute, celebrated the best in Swedish cinema from 2024. on January 13, 2025, at Cirkus in Stockholm. Broadcast live on SVT1, the prestigious event was hosted by actress Shima Niavarani and marked the return of the Guldbagge Newcomer Award. This year introduced a significant change, allowing first-time actors to be nominated by removing the previous requirement of prior performances, highlighting a fresh wave of talent in Swedish filmmaking.

The 60th Guldbagge Awards were dominated by Crossing and The Swedish Torpedo, each winning four awards and solidifying their place among the most celebrated films of the year. Crossing, directed by Levan Akin, won the prestigious Best Film award, along with Best Director, Best Cinematography for Lisabi Fridell, and Best Sound Design. The Swedish Torpedo dominated in technical categories, winning Best Costume Design and Best Production Design, Best Makeup and Hair, Best Production Design, and Best Visual Effects. Meanwhile, The Hypnosis, a standout comedy, won three awards, including Best Screenplay for Ernst De Geer and Mads Stegger, Best Actor for Herbert Nordrum, and Best Supporting Actor for David Fukamachi Regnfors. The Audience Award was given to The Last Journey, which also took home Best Documentary, showcasing its strong connection with viewers.

This year’s festival highlighted the return of the Guldbagge Newcomer Award, which was presented to Loran Batti for G-21 Scenes from Gottsunda. Additionally, the decision to allow first-time actors to be nominated brought new talent to the forefront, with Bianca Kronlöf winning Best Actress for her role in Heartbeat. Other acting awards included Eva Melander’s win for Best Supporting Actress in Trouble. The nominations, announced on December 17, 2024, saw The Hypnosis and The Swedish Torpedo leading with eight nominations each, followed closely by Crossing with seven. The diversity of films recognized this year highlighted Swedish cinema's growing range and creativity.

The ceremony also included a heartfelt tribute to Lasse Hallström, who was honored with the prestigious Honorary Award for his lifelong contributions to Swedish and international cinema. The Gullspiran, an award honoring contributions to children’s films, was presented to Johanna Bergenstråhle. The ceremony, hosted by the dynamic and engaging Shima Niavarani, showcased the richness and diversity of Swedish filmmaking. By celebrating seasoned veterans, rising stars, and a wide range of storytelling, the 60th Guldbagge Awards highlighted the achievements of the past year while offering a glimpse into the bright future of Sweden’s film industry.
