Disney and Pixar have officially announced that Coco 2 is in development, a highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Academy Award-winning film Coco. The announcement was made by CEO Bob Iger during The Walt Disney Company’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders, where he expressed excitement for the project, according to Disney. “While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure,” Iger said. Fans of the original movie can look forward to more updates soon.
The original 2017 film was a box office success, grossing over USD 800 million globally. It won two Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for the touching ballad “Remember Me.” Coco tells the story of Miguel, a 12-year-old boy who dreams of playing the guitar despite his family’s generations-old ban on music. After being accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead during the Mexican holiday of Día de Los Muertos, Miguel seeks the help of his great-great-grandfather to return home and lift the ban on music. The sequel will reunite the creative team behind the original, including director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina, with Oscar®-winning producer Mark Nielsen returning as well.
In recent years, Pixar has seen great success with sequels to several fan-favorite films. Incredibles 2 became the highest-grossing animated film of 2018, earning USD 1.24 billion globally. However, Inside Out 2 has now taken the crown as the highest-grossing animated film of 2024, surpassing even live-action blockbusters like Dune: Part Two, which grossed USD 711 million worldwide. Pixar is also currently working on other exciting sequels, including Toy Story 5 and Incredibles 3, alongside new animated features like Elio and Hoppers. With so many projects in the works, the studio’s continued focus on beloved characters and stories ensures a bright future for animation lovers.
