What is it about?

Coraline’, which was initially released in 2009 to critical acclaim and positive reviews, follows 11-year-old Coraline as she navigates her new life after moving to Oregon. Her inattentive parents who appear to enjoy writing a garden catalogue more than their daughters company, are a primary reason for Coraline’s longing for a different life, and a small door in her flat in the Pink Palace apartments, helps her accomplish this. When Coraline crawls through the door for the first time, she enters a parallel of her own house, and life. It looks like a dream, her house is vibrant and beautiful, it seems to be exactly what she has longed for, and her ‘Other’ parents who have buttons for eyes, lavish her with attention and games. The too good to be true reality wears off as Coraline keeps visiting the other world, and the once charming Other Mother shows her true colours and tries to keep Coraline locked away forever.

A success for every age

Coraline’ is a play on the saying, “be careful what you wish for”, it strives to teach children to appreciate what they already have, and not ask for more. And the 3D remastered version was a huge success not only for children and teenagers, but also loyal fans who witnessed the original screening in 2009. The 3D elements enhanced the already perfect cinematic experience, which added new and thorough depth to the visuals within the film. At the end of the credit roll, the creators overviewed how they created Coraline puppets for stop motion, and some of the animation processes to give the audience insight to the insane amount of hard work and effort which goes into each individual movement within the film.

The artists and animators stated how they want Coraline to live on for years to come, and that they will use their new updated puppets to make sure of this. Judging by the atmosphere in the cinema, the financial success, and online reviews, the ‘Coraline’ 15th anniversary special managed to exceed the expectations of everyone. LAIKA studios’ next feature, ‘Wildwood’, which was just announced, will expect to see similar reception based on this past weekend’s success.
