‘Don’t Look Up’ is Netflix's next film that already looks like it will be taking over our houses at Christmas. It is Adam McKay’s (The Big Short) next masterpiece, a master of comedy who, during the last few years, started hiding political denunciations among the lines of his films.
It will only hit the screens of a few selected theatres on the 10th of December and will then be available for all Netflix’s subscribers on the 24th, just in time for Christmas. The cast includes la crème de la crème of Hollywood like Jonah Hill, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Timothée Chalamet, Rob Morgan, Mark Rylance and even Ariana Grande.
As it can be easily understood by its trailer, it is a film about climate change but, despite the fact he is in the cast, it was not Leonardo Di Caprio’s idea. It tells the story of two astronomists (played by our dear Leo and the great Jennyfer Lawrence) who find out that a comet is about to hit the Earth leading to the extinction of all humans and the majority of life forms on the planet. Therefore, the two try to convince the government, the press and the public of the imminent threat; but they end up being ignored.
As he tried to do with ‘The Big Short’ telling the story behind the 2007/2008 economic crisis, Mckay wants to shine a light on the fact that the climate emergency has been going on for years, ignored by humanity. That is why, as it can be understood by the trailer, ‘Don’t Look Up’ will be a comedy, full of funny moments; but we have all reasons to think that it will be that kind of comedy aimed at making you laugh while your brain starts to actually think about the hidden meanings of every joke. We can guess this is a very effective way to catch people’s attention.
