At this stage in his career, Tom Cruise has accomplished almost everything. The Mission: Impossible star has piloted Boeing fighter jets, climbed the world's tallest building, held his breath underwater for six minutes, driven a motorcycle off a cliff, and somehow made us believe that his 5'7" stature could convincingly portray the towering Jack Reacher. However, one thing the Hollywood legend hasn't ventured into is horror. According to Deadline, that's about to change as Cruise plans to collaborate with his American Made and Edge Of Tomorrow director Doug Liman on Deeper, a new supernatural thriller.
As reported by Roger Friedman's Showbiz411 and confirmed by Deadline, Liman and Cruise are partnering with Warner Bros. to create their third (possibly fourth, considering a SpaceX movie is also in the works) film together. Friedman's source for this exciting development is Liman himself, who, during a recent New York screening of the documentary Gaucho Gaucho, told the entertainment journalist that he's interested in making a "scary movie," highlighting that he and Tom Cruise have never done one before. As for the film's plot, all that's known so far is that it involves an astronaut encountering "a terrifying force" during a deep dive into an unexplored trench.
Cruise and Liman are the latest pair to attempt to get Deeper off the ground, following previous involvement from Bradley Cooper and Kornél Mundruczó, as well as Idris Elba and Baltasar Kormákur. The project has been circulating in Hollywood since 2016. However, with Cruise seemingly preparing for his final Mission: Impossible adventure with The Final Reckoning, and Liman recently completing this year's The Instigators and Road House, it appears the film may have found the perfect team to finally bring it to the screen. If we spot Tom Cruise in a spacesuit or wearing flippers and a snorkel soon, we'll have a good idea of what cinema's most daring star is up to next. Yes, Edge Of Tomorrow 2: Live, Die, Repeat And Repeat — obviously!
