Gladiator 2 triumphs in the international box office

The long-anticipated sequel to Gladiator was released last week, around the world, taking in $87 million. This is Ridley Scott’s highest international opening, performing particularly well in the UK and France. The film is yet to be released in the US and Canada, but it is sure to be a hit.

“Gladiator 2” relates back to the first film, using similar storylines, with an all-new cast, starring big names like Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal. Director Ridley Scott has already teased a third Gladiator film, which Paul Mescal would love to be a part of.

Mescal’s character is heartfelt yet ruthless to those he disagrees with. He gives an incredible performance, in a role that is unlike anything he has done before. He shocked fans after revealing that it took just 45 minutes of exercise a day to achieve his gladiator physique.

However, the most interesting character of the film was portrayed by Denzel Washington and his performance will undoubtedly be the most spoken about. He has already sparked a media frenzy after revealing a same-sex kiss was cut from the film, a rumour to which Ridley Scott denies. Nevertheless, Washington was captivating on screen, with his alluring persona, eventually becoming treacherous.

There are talks of an Oscar for Denzel Washington’s performance, but he has focused more on relaying his belief that it is time for Ridley Scott to win. The well-praised director has yet to win an award despite his incredible career and many nominations. “Gladiator” came close, winning Best Picture and Best Actor (Russell Crowe) however Scott himself did not win the award.

So, will this be Ridley Scott’s chance to finally get the Oscar?
