Glen Powell refutes rumors of taking over the Mission: Impossible franchise and stepping into the shoes of Tom Cruise, reports Deadline.
The Twisters star is dismissing claims that his Top Gun: Maverick co-star was pushing for Powell to replace him in the movie series following the release of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning on May 23, 2025. “My mom would never approve of that,” Powell stated to Pat McAfee after being contacted by the ESPN host during his live broadcast. Powell added, “That’s a death trap,” referring to the stunts the role demands.
During his live broadcast, McAfee learned about Powell's news and phoned the actor to offer his congratulations. Powell, who appeared to be busy filming his new movie, "The Running Man," was unable to make an on-camera appearance due to being in full costume. In the movie, he shares the screen with Josh Brolin and Lee Pace. The Running Man is adapted from the renowned Stephen King novel he penned using the pseudonym Richard Bachman. It unfolds in a dystopian future where the authorities manipulate the media and tracks the journey of Ben Richards (Powell), who willingly joins a lethal television contest. In this game, he will be pursued by skilled assassins for a month. If he manages to endure, he stands to receive a monetary reward that could potentially rescue his ailing child and improve his family's dire circumstances.
William H. Macy, Karl Glusman, Katy O’Brian, Daniel Ezra, Jayme Lawson, Michael Cera, and Emilia Jones are among Powell’s fellow actors in the Edgar Wright movie.
