Governors Awards: Oscar Contenders and Industry Veterans Honored

Top Oscar contenders gathered at the annual Governors Awards in Hollywood to honor industry legends.

Quincy Jones and Juliet Taylor received honorary Oscars, while producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli were honored with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award for overseeing the Bond film series. Filmmaker Richard Curtis received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. The honorees were chosen by the Academy's board of governors, including Marlee Matlin and Ava DuVernay. Janet Yang highlighted the upcoming 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025, hosted by Conan O'Brien and attended by Malala Yousafzai, Jennifer Lawrence, Mark Hamill, Pamela Anderson, and Sharon Stone.


Colman Domingo acted as an unofficial host at the ceremony, addressing the political climate and expressing optimism about the impact of films on bridging divides. Nicole Kidman introduced Juliet Taylor, known for casting over 100 films, including 43 of Woody Allen’s works. Daniel Craig presented the Thalberg Award to Broccoli and Wilson, while Hugh Grant introduced Hersholt recipient Richard Curtis. Curtis humorously recommended his new film, "The Heretic," dedicated his award to charity workers globally, and encouraged film industry peers to allocate a portion of their budget towards impactful initiatives.

A tribute to Quincy Jones featured Jamie Foxx leading the celebration of Jones's 91 years and entertaining with an impression of "Q." Jennifer Hudson followed with a musical tribute, and Rashida Jones spoke about her father's musical legacy, inviting everyone to appreciate his music on their way home.
