“Heretic” is A24’s latest enthralling watch. It is a religious thriller, directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, that keeps you on the edge of your seat for all 111 minutes of the film. It stars Hugh Grant as Mr Reed, a charming man, who slowly becomes more unsettling as the film goes on. He manipulates two young missionaries, played by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East and forces them to question their own faith.
The story delves into what it means to have faith in your own religion by questioning the practise of Mormonism. It starts out with a friendly tone yet hints at something sinister lurking in the background. Most of this takes place in Mr Reed’s home, creating a tense atmosphere with little chance of escape.
Chloe East gave a powerful performance as Sister Paxton, a woman devoted to her faith and willing to challenge Mr Reed’s views. Sister Barnes, played by Sophie Thatcher, had a fierce personality with a perceptive mind. The Sisters had contrasting characterisation, yet they worked well on screen together.
The best aspect of this film was the sounds as they emphasised the tension at every moment. From the spine-chilling sound of chalk against blackboard to the slow drip of water into the abyss, sound was significant in every scene. It worked well to intensify the disturbing nature of Mr Reed, creating an eerie atmosphere.
“Heretic” is a film that does not rely on many characters, extravagant settings or wild plot twists; it uses sound and the close focus on three key characters to provide an unsettling story. It is thrilling without being over the top and horrific without the exaggerated gore. It will leave viewers with their hearts racing and questions about religion flooding their minds.
