Johnny Depp Held Back Tears after the Screening of Jeanne du Barry at the Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes film Festival has now started with the opening ceremony that was held on Tuesday, May 16, at 7:00 pm. The opening film for the festival was Maïwenn’s Jeanne du Barry, which also got released in theaters in France that same day.

The movie stars the embattled actor Johnny Depp who hasn’t appeared much in public since the legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard in 2022. Now he is finally making a comeback at the Cannes Film Festival.

The movie Jeanne du Barry received a seven-minute standing ovation at its premiere on the opening night of the Cannes Film Festival. Johnny Depp held back tears when the crowd applauded him for his performance in the film as King Louis XV.

Maïwenn, who is both the film’s director but also plays the part of Jeanne du Barry, broke out into tears as she took the mic. She then said: “It was a production that was difficult to finance... and I want to share this moment with all my team across the theater.”

The film is a biographical drama inspired by the rise and fall of Jeanne du Barry who was the mistress of King Louis XV. In the beginning of the story it is shown how Jeanne was born into a working–class family in 1743. Jeanne later on uses her charm to rise through the ranks of the French court. King Louis XV falls madly in love with her which leads to him moving her into his Versailles palace, which results in scandal for the court.

Even if there has been some controversy regarding the film and the cast, the audience’ reaction to it shows that the Cannes Film Festival surely chose the right film to open the festival with
