The society of the snow , the latest film by director J.A., arrives on Netflix from January 4th. Bayona presented out of competition at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. The Netflix film The Snow Society is inspired by a true story and tells how, in 1972, flight 571 of the Uruguay Air Force with a rugby team on board in Chile it falls on a glacier in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 of the 45 passengers survive the crash, finding themselves in one of the most hostile environments in the world and forced to resort to extreme measures (including cannibalism) to stay alive. Based on a book by Pablo Vierci, the Netflix film Society of the snow was chosen to represent Spain at the 2024 Oscars in the "Best international feature film" category.
It is the story of how the passengers of a plane that crashed into a mountain in the Andes, or at least those who did not die on impact, remained alive in the snow for 73 days. The best-known detail is that those who managed to get to the end did so by resorting to cannibalism of the corpses of other passengers after having exhausted the food supplies contained in the luggage and wreckage of the plane. The snow society right from the title adds a level of interpretation, that is, how people can manage to stay together in an extreme condition and with the constant specter of death.
The great achievement of The Society of the snow is that of managing to be full of heterogeneous characters, who do not seem like narrative functions but give the chaotic impression of actually being the ones who survived, the film tries to rebuild these characters from scratch, as if they had to take on another role in this newborn society that has the sole objective of making everyone survive. It softens the catastrophe and focuses on how people in the most terrible of situations can work together to get out of it.
