"Limonov: The Ballad" to compete in Cannes

“Limonov: The Ballad” competes for the Palme D’Or at the 2024 Cannes film festival. The film is based on the 2011 book “Limonov” about the Russian dissident writer Eduard Limonov by Emmanuel Carrère.

 

The film is directed by Kirill Serebrennikov, known for movies such as Leto (2018) and The Student (2016). “Limonov: The Ballad” stars Ben Whishaw, known for his portrayal as Q in the Daniel Craig edition of the “James Bond” franchise, Other co-stars include Masha Mashkova and Tomas Arana. The movie was filmed in New York City where the story takes place.

 

The plot centers around Eduard Limonov, as his extraordinary tale unfolds as that of a Soviet poet turned vagrant in New York, rising to prominence in France, and ultimately evolving into a controversial political figure in Russia as a founder of the National Bolshevik Party.
