Anora was awarded best picture of 2024 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, which presented its annual achievement awards on Sunday, celebrating its 50th year of recognizing Hollywood talent both in front of and behind the camera. The Brutalist was named the runner-up.
Anora also achieved two acting awards: Best lead performance was given to Marianne Jean-Baptiste for Hard Truths and Mikey Madison for Anora, while best supporting performance was awarded to Yura Borisov for Anora and Kieran Culkin for A Real Pain.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross from Nine Inch Nails were also winners at the ceremony, earning the best score award for Challengers. Mohammad Rasoulof received the best director award for The Seed of the Sacred Fig.
The association previously recognized science fiction icon John Carpenter with this year’s career achievement award, highlighting his “ability to create stylish, forward-thinking, genre-defying films of otherworldly threat and deep emotion,” and noting that “his illustrious career coincides with our group’s 50-year history.”
Typically, the organization’s pick for best picture receives an Oscar nomination for the top award of the night. This was the case last year when Zone of Interest won the LAFCA trophy and subsequently secured a best international feature Oscar and a best picture nomination. For the third consecutive year, the L.A. Film Critics Association Awards will include gender-neutral acting categories.
