On the occasion of the Fourth of July that sees America celebrating independence, here are some patriotic movies and TV shows to watch and get in the spirit of the day.


  1. 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington' (1939)

The movie celebrates pre-war Americana and pride, where Jefferson Smith replaces a deceased senator, yet he finds his political aspirations overshadowed by Washington corruption and big business. The message attached to the movie lies in the importance of decency and honesty in our lives, where even a single person can make a difference.

The movie shows Alvin York going to war, becoming a war hero against his non-violent beliefs.

3. '1776' (1972)

An American historical musical comedy drama film describing the founding fathers on their way to the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

4. 'Forrest Gump' (1994)

The movie describes the story of an Alabama man named Forrest Gump, who inspired many people thanks to his childlike optimism. He succeeded in many aspects throughout his life, from becoming a football star to the captain on a shrimp boat. It encourages us to find the true meaning of life despite several hardships.

5. 'Pearl Harbor' (2001)

The 2001 film is based on two friends, Rafe McCawley (Ben Affleck) and Danny Walker (Josh Hartnett), becoming pilots in World War II. Rafe does his first fight alongside England’s Royal Air Force in Europe, but he comes back to his girlfriend and Danny right before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

6. 'We Were Soldiers' (2002)

Based on the book “We Were Soldiers Once … and Young,” the movie portrays the first major battle between the US and North Vietnamese factors, emphasizing the sacrifice from women and men at home and at war.
