Vendôme Pictures has announced that they are teaming up again with director Andrew Niccol and the ever-popular actor Nicolas Cage for a sequel to their 2005 crime drama, Lord of War. Titled Lords of War, the film will see Cage reprising his role as notorious gunrunner Yuri Orlov, but this time he'll have a son joining him for the occasion - Bill Skarsgård as Anton. Principal photography for the sequel is set to begin in the fall of 2023.
Although Lord of War is not considered one of Cage's most well-known films, it received decently positive reviews and was acclaimed for exposing the dangers of illegal international arms dealing, inspired by the real-life exploits of gunrunner Viktor Bout. In the sequel, Anton and Yuri will engage in a rivalry that goes beyond just selling guns, as Anton amasses an army of mercenaries and the two men compete for the same woman in their quest for power.
Director Niccol believes that there are still plenty of stories to be told surrounding Yuri, and adding a son to the mix only adds to the complexity of his character. The team behind Lords of War is an impressive one, with Cage fresh off his work on Renfield, Skarsgård having just finished filming for John Wick: Chapter 4 in 2023, and Niccol, whose credits include The Truman Show and Gattaca both release in 1998.
Vendôme's Philippe Rousselet is excited to return to the world of Lord of War, noting that the possibilities for stories are endless. The dangerous journey that Yuri and Anton will embark on promises to make for an explosive sequel. With principal photography set to begin in the fall of 2023, fans of Lord of War can look forward to a captivating and thrilling film.
