The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the shortlists for 10 categories ahead of the 97th Oscars, giving key contenders a boost in their awards campaigns. Categories with preliminary selections include Documentary Feature, International Feature, Original Score, Original Song, and Visual Effects.
Notable mentions include Neftlix’s “Emilia Pérez”, which leads with six category placements including International Feature, Sound, and two orginal Song entries, and Universal’s “Wicked,” which earned four nods. Other contenders appearing across multiple categories include “Dune: Part Two,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” and “Nosferatu.”
Student films also made their mark, with five Student Academy Award winners advancing in categories such as Animated Shorts and Live-Action Shorts.
Oscar voting to determine final nominees opens on January 8 and closes on January 12. Nominations will be announced on January 17, while the ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, is set to air live on March 2, 2025, on ABC.
