The Cannes Film Festival 2023 has now started and will continue till May 27th. The Opening Ceremony took place on Tuesday, May 16, at 7:00 pm. The Closing Ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 27, at 8:30 pm, when the jury will give out the rewards.
The actress Chiara Mastroianni is serving as Master of Ceremony and the host of the 76th edition of Cannes Film Festival. During the Opening Ceremony, Mastroianni welcomed the jury up on the stage of the Palais des Festivals’ Grand Théâtre Lumière.
Ruben Östlund is the Jury President for the 76th Cannes Film Festival. Alongside him are jury members Maryam Touzani, Denis Ménochet, Rungano Nyoni, Brie Larson, Paul Dano, Atiq Rahimi, Damián Szifron and Julia Ducournau.
During the Jury Conference held at the Cannes Film Festival, the members shared their different reactions upon being informed of their selection to serve on the esteemed panel. Damián Szifron for instance, explained that “well actually I was a little bit shocked, and I thought about it for like ten minutes and then of course I accepted it. It’s great to be here and among these very talented people, watching remarkable films, chosen by remarkable people and so I hope we can do a good work.”
Rungano Nyon said “I thought it was a scam. I’m really paranoid so I googled everyone and then I still thought it was a scam, (…), I’m still shocked”. Brie Larson later on said that “Just surprised, I’ve never been here before so to be asked, it just felt like a huge honor. (…)”.
The President of the Cannes Film Festival, Ruben Östlund, explained that “I was super happy, I was very honored. I felt, woow it’s happening ten years too early maybe. I felt way too young to have this position already. But then I had one day to think, I asked for one day to think, and then I definitely was saying yes, I really really wanted to do it (…).” He then added that “(…) getting to know how the audience works, it’s a great exercise for a director to be in Cannes and watch movie after movie, in order to understand how the dynamics works in an audience and so on (…)”.
The jury truly consists of talented people, and it will be interesting to see how they will give out the different rewards.
