Snub or Oversight? The Oscars' Decisions

This year Oscar’s nominations have seen a lot of controversy. Greta Gerwigs' Barbie film, which made over a million pounds on the big screen has caused a lot of upset.

Greta Gerwigs ‘Barbie’ based on the popular doll stages its theme around women's empowerment seeing how women don’t need men to appear powerful. This sees Greta herself and filmstar Margot Robbie (Barbie) missing out on nominations whilst Ryan Gosling (Ken) achieves a nomination for best supporting role.

This nomination led to Ryan posting an Instagram message talking about the matter. Saying the following:

“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig & Margot Robbie… No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit, and genius.”

With the message of the film around how it’s a ‘man’s world’ not nominating the director for the film and not nominating the main star of the film whilst simultaneously nominating Ryan Gosling for his role does seem to fit into the theme with the movie which has led to the controversy.

What do you think? Are the Oscars right and Greta and Margot weren’t good enough to be nominated or have they been snubbed?

Other big missies from the Oscars include the following:

  • No Leonardo DiCaprio or Zac Efron in Best Actor

  • No TMNT: Mutant Mayhem in Best Animated Film

  • No Greta Lee or Margot Robbie in Best Actress

  • No Charles Melton or Willem Dafoe in Best Supporting Actor

  • No Rachel McAdams in Best Supporting Actress

  • Across The Spider-Verse not in Best Original Score

  • The Iron Claw, John Wick 4 & Priscilla got 0 nominations

  • No Strange Way of Life in Best Short Film

  • Only 2 nominations for Past
