The film debuted at Venice Film Festival last September receiving great reviews from the Festival's critics. Rafael Motamayor, one of the reviewers, gave it an “A-“, lauding many aspects of it, from the fight scenes that he defined as “epic”, to the cast’s performances. As a matter of fact, the ensemble is quite promising starring Matt Damon, Jodie Comer, Adam Driver and Ben Affleck covering the major roles.
Set to be released in US theatres on the 15th of October, the film tells the story about a knight (Matt Damon) whose wife (Jodie Comer) gets raped by one of his husband's friends (Adam Driver). As a consequence, the two men find themselves forced to fight to death to find justice. The film is based on true events that took place in 14th century France resulting in what would be the last legally sanctioned duel in French history.
During a press conference presenting the film, Nicole Holofcener, Affleck, and Damon – the screenwriters – talked about how they had clear intentions for the script from the very beginning, adapting it from Eric Jager’s book. During the conference, they all revealed how the most challenging part in the writing process was giving all different perspectives, developing the core of the story around the woman. Also, they spent a lot of time in Ireland to better understand how to shoot the fighting scenes.
Reading around everything that has been said about this film so far, we must expect another masterpiece signed by Scott. Needless to say, when it comes to Ridley Scott it is hard to be disappointed and that is why many are already talking about an Oscar nomination!
