According to NME, Tim Burton has mentioned that he is “sure there will be” another collaboration with Johnny Depp in the future, although it likely won’t be an Edward Scissorhands sequel. The duo frequently teamed up in the late ’90s and ’00s for films like Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Corpse Bride (2005), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), and Alice in Wonderland (2010). Depp hasn't appeared in a Burton film since 2012’s Dark Shadows.
When questioned about the possibility of another collaboration with Depp, Burton responded: “Well, I’m sure there will be.” “I never think, ‘I’m going to use this or that actor.’ It typically depends on the project I’m involved in. That’s the essence of film. It’s about collaboration and exchanging ideas with those around you.”
Although 1988’s Beetlejuice recently received a sequel titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Burton stated that not every film requires a follow-up installment. “There are some films I prefer not to create sequels for,” Burton remarked. “I didn’t want to make a sequel to that because it seemed like a standalone piece. Similarly, I didn’t want a sequel for ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ because it also felt like a unique creation. Some things are better left as they are, and for me, that is one of them.”
NME gave Beetlejuice Beetlejuice a four-star review, stating: "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is packed with brilliantly absurd scenes, such as Keaton’s character literally spilling his guts, Belluci’s venomous witch reassembling her mutilated body to a remix of the Bee Gees‘ ‘Tragedy’, and a hilarious group lip-sync to Richard Harris’s campy classic ‘MacArthur Park’.
“While the film has its flaws, including some unnecessary CGI sandworms that clash with the otherwise kitschy practical effects, its playful spirit remains constant. It’s silly, exuberant, and slightly grotesque – exactly what we hope for from Beetlejuice.”
In October, it was revealed that Depp was being considered for his first significant Hollywood role in years, in the thriller Day Drinker. He will play a mysterious day drinker who encounters Penélope Cruz’s cruise ship bartender, leading them both into a criminal underworld.
This marks his first major role since his legal disputes with former wife Amber Heard, in which he won a defamation case against her in 2022. The jury also determined that Depp had defamed Heard through his lawyer. Moreover, he lost a libel case against The Sun in the UK in 2020.
