Tom Hardy is set to reprise his role as the iconic Marvel anti-hero, Venom, in the upcoming film Venom: The Last Dance.
This marks the culmination of a trilogy that has spanned six years, with Hardy portraying journalist Eddie Brock, who forms a unique bond with an alien symbiote to become Venom.
Hardy's involvement in the Venom franchise goes beyond acting, as he has contributed to the storytelling, earning a story by credit on The Last Dance and its predecessor, Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021). Collaborating with his frequent writing partner Kelly Marcel, who takes on the role of director for this installment, Hardy has been instrumental in shaping the narrative of the series.
The Last Dance follows the success of Venom (2018), which exceeded expectations at the box office, grossing $856.1 million worldwide. Its sequel, Let There Be Carnage (2021), continued the momentum with box office earnings surpassing $506.8 million, despite facing challenges posed by the pandemic and a shifting landscape in the superhero movie genre.
For Sony, the Venom franchise has emerged as a standout success in its endeavor to expand the universe of films centered around Spider-Man's supporting characters. While other projects like Morbius (2022) and Madame Web (2023) have not achieved the same level of commercial success, Hardy's portrayal of Venom has resonated with audiences worldwide.
The Last Dance represents a crucial moment for the franchise, testing the audience's continued interest in these characters and storylines amidst a competitive landscape of superhero films. Sony's upcoming release of Kraven the Hunter in December, shortly after The Last Dance, underscores the studio's commitment to expanding its cinematic universe. The ensemble cast of The Last Dance includes talented actors like Juno Temple and Chiwetel Ejiofor, adding depth to the film's roster.
