Hollywood was eagerly anticipating the success of A Minecraft Movie, and it didn't disappoint. In its opening weekend, the film earned a staggering $157 million in North America, with an additional $144 million from international markets, bringing its global debut to an impressive $301 million. This success is particularly noteworthy for Hollywood, which has faced a tough start to 2025. The film not only marked the biggest opening of the year but also set a new record for video game adaptations, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $146 million debut. As school spring breaks continue, A Minecraft Movie is just getting started, further solidifying its strong performance at the box office.
“We’re just thrilled that audiences are responding and that everyone’s going to the theater,” said Pamela Abdy, co-chair and CEO of the Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group. The film, directed by Jared Hess, features a star-studded cast including Jack Black and Jason Momoa. Despite its video game origins and a lack of a deep narrative, the movie resonated with fans, many of whom are among the 200 million active monthly players of the game. The PG-rated film’s success came as a surprise to analysts who initially predicted an $80 million opening, only for it to nearly double that figure. "You can’t underestimate the value of earnest, entertaining, joyous cinema," said Michael DeLuca, co-chair and CEO, adding that the film's broad appeal made it a hit across cinemas worldwide.
While critics were mixed on A Minecraft Movie, audience reception was more positive, with a promising B+ CinemaScore and high ratings in exit polls. The film, a collaboration between Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros., was shown in over 4,000 locations domestically and 36,000 screens internationally. This marked a strong comeback for video game adaptations, a genre that has seen increasing success in recent years with hits like Sonic and Five Nights at Freddy's. "Video games were once a genre that had very mixed results at the box office, but the code has finally been cracked," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore. With the summer movie season on the horizon, A Minecraft Movie has already begun to shift Hollywood's fortunes, narrowing the year's box office deficit significantly.
