“West Side Story” banned in some Middle Eastern countries

The most recent news about Steven Spielberg's take on the famous movie “West Side Story” is that it will be banned in different countries of the Gulf region: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Kuwait.

The decision is a consequence of the strict censorship policies in relation to gender diversity and sexuality: movies with lgbtq+ thematics are usually modified or banned in Middle Eastern countries, as it has been the case of Marvel's “Eternals”.

This time is “West Side Story” that it's considered to be somewhat inappropriate: in fact, the movie has a transgender character named Anybodys, played by non-binary actor Iris Menas.

“West Side Story” releases elsewhere in theaters this Friday, December 10.
