The central themes of “Call Me by Your Name” and “Bones and All” resonate in Luca Guadagnino’s latest movie as well, Challengers, which exploits love and desire among young people. In the new trailer, dropped on June 20, 2023, the main stars of the movie: Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist are being exposed.
Tashi Duncan (Zendaya) is a determined tennis player and coach, married to another tennis champion (Faist). While her husband’s losing the sparkle of greatness, she trains him in order to face a grand competition against her former lover (O’Connor). This love triangle enriches the plot with drama and action, along with great performances by the stars. Past and present intertwine while the three protagonists must face their long friendship and the tension of competition.
A report from Guadagnino for Variety states that Zendaya’s training for the role took about three months with the professional tennis coach Brand Gilbert, who also served as a consultant for the movie. “I mean, wow. We edited the movie, and we almost actually don’t use any of her double. She’s so good” Guadagnino said.
Some more famous names are said to have collaborated in the production of the film, such as screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, known for their work in “Bones and All”. Amy Pascal, producer of “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, helped with the production process as well.
With the release of the trailer, MGM described the movie on Twitter as a way to show “the art of seduction and other games”. “Challengers” is set to come out in cinemas on September 15, 2023.
