After Box Office and award successes in 2019 and 2020, films by female directors mark a retreat. Films directed by women who made it to the top 100 grossing champions in 2021 were just 12%, up from 16% in 2020.
This fact is at the heart of a study entitled "Celluloid Ceiling" and published for the 24th consecutive year by the San Diego State's Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film.
